“Wreaths Across America” (Unsung: A Hardworking Series by Shell Rotella)
Published on Nov 4, 2016 – Shell Rotella [7,238+]

A boyhood visit to Arlington National Cemetery left a big impression on Morrill Worcester—one he never forgot. Decades later, in 1992, his company’s surplus of 5,000 wreaths and his desire to have them placed at Arlington kicked off an annual tribute that went on quietly for over ten years. With national interest in the project having grown so greatly, in 2007 a dedicated group of volunteers formed Wreaths Across America as a non-profit- Wreaths Across America – to continue and expand the mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach. That vision that Morrill had so many years ago only came to manifest through the hard work and collaboration of all the parties who make it possible every year – from the truckers to the wreath makers to the volunteers in all the cemeteries across the United states and all over the world. Janet Reno, the first female attorney general of the United States, has died of complications from Parkinson’s disease, relatives told the AP and CNN.

She was 78.

A graduate of Harvard Law School, Reno became attorney general under President Bill Clinton in 1993. She ran the Justice Department during some of the administration’s most prominent controversies, including the raid of a Waco, Texas, cult compound that left over 80 people dead and the decision to return 6-year-old Elián González to his father in Cuba. Reno was also caught in the crosshairs of many of Clinton’s personal legal troubles.

But Reno’s career wasn’t only defined by scandal. The longest-serving attorney general of the 20th century, she was a staunch advocate for women’s rights and pushed Congress to pass stronger laws protecting abortion seekers and providers.

“I think we should do everything we can under federal law to protect a woman’s right to choose from physical restraints that people would try to place on it,” Reno told CNN at the beginning of her DOJ tenure.

She also oversaw the capture and conviction of some of America’s most notorious criminals, including Ted “Unabomber” Kaczynski and Timothy McVeigh, the man behind the Oklahoma City bombing.
. . .
Reno was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1995. Despite her illness, she ran for governor of Florida in 2002 as a Democrat, campaigning in a pickup truck years before former Republican Sen. Scott Brown ever did. Though she lost, the primary race was noted for being “kind of a lovefest.”
. . .
“Outspoken, outrageous, absolutely indifferent to others’ opinions,” Paul Anderson wrote in his biography, Janet Reno: Doing The Right Thing. “Janet Reno was truly one of a kind.”

Speaking to Yourselves

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord…
Greek Scriptures [Ephesians 5:19 KJV]

A favorite hymn of my Aunt Mattie

“Jesus Hold My Hand” led by Bro. Oates (Lyrics from Psalm 10)

15See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 18And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

LYRICS – “Make a Joyful Noise unto the Lord”
King James Bible, Psalm 100

1{A Psalm of praise.} Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
2Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
3Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

King James translation of the Greek Scriptures transformed into a hymn. Click the graphic above to listen to the acapella version (i.e., without instrumental accompaniment). Jesus of Nazareth exhorts His listeners to focus first on spiritual matters and to trust God for fulfillment of basic material needs.

The Greek Scriptures record His own experience with choosing to be sustained by the Word of God instead of mere physical food (i.e., bread). This hymn exhorts us to follow His example and to trust God to provide the answers we seek. Click the various links below to delve deeper into the spiritual feast (i.e., “food for thought”) offered by this hymn as you contemplate metaphysical realities.

LYRICS:  Seek Ye First

Seek ye first the kingdom of God,
And His righteousness,
And all these things
shall be added unto you.
Alleluia, Alleluia.

Man shall not live by bread alone,
But by every word
That proceeds from the mouth of God,
Alleluia, Alleluia.

Ask and it shall be given unto you,
Seek and ye shall find.
Knock and the door shall be
opened unto you,
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Seekye first the kingdom of God,
And His righteousness,
And all these things
shall be added unto you.
Alleluia, Alleluia.

Matthew 6:33 KJV
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 4:4 KJV
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Matthew 7:7-8 KJV
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Colossians 3:1 KJV
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

The Moving: HUMAN, the Movie – Vol. 1

If eyes are the mirrors of the soul, do we all have the same desires . . . what does it mean to be “human”? Why is it still so hard to understand one another?

Traveling through 65 countries in search of answers, filmmaker and artist Yann Arthus-Bertrand captured the voices of “people we talk about … people we never talk about”. The wealth and diversity of these voices reveal the heart of humanity.

HUMAN, Volume 1

Published on Sep 11, 2015 – The VOL.1 deals with the themes of love, women, work and poverty. [Turn on the Closed Captions (CC) to know the countries where the images were filmed and the first name of the interviewees.]

What is it that makes us human? Is it that we love, that we fight ? That we laugh ? Cry ? Our curiosity ? The quest for discovery ?

Driven by these questions, filmmaker and artist Yann Arthus-Bertrand spent three years collecting real-life stories from 2,000 women and men in 60 countries. Working with a dedicated team of translators, journalists and cameramen, Yann captures deeply personal and emotional accounts of topics that unite us all; struggles with poverty, war, homophobia, and the future of our planet mixed with moments of love and happiness.

  • Reflections from Day 1

The following is strictly the opinion of Gene Marie Kennedy and not necessarily the intentions nor actual content of the sessions presented on November 1, 2015.

NOTION: Relationships Are a Mirror of the Self
Often my Self is obscured by the many garbs of my Ego playing a variety of roles in my Life. I mistaken the roles to be Me but really they are simply aspects but not the whole Me. Because my thoughts and actions are an expression of me derived from my perception of the world, people, things and circumstances around me, how I move through life really depends on the choices I make. How I interact with my environment and other people reveals more about my Self and my Ego (me masquerading as my Self).

Each encounter offers an opportunity for discovery and refinement. If I am perturbed, I can ask what it is about Me that I can love and accept? It’s an illusion to be angry at another person or condition because my reaction is personal even if my “opinion” is also held by others. When I can ask, “What am I really feeling?” then I can begin unraveling the “Why?” to discover the need I’m perceiving.

Jesus’ exhortation to “love thy neighbor as thyself” takes on new meaning when I look closer into my relationships to discover my present capacity to love. Any conflicts I detect can be viewed as opportunities to distinguish between the roles of my Ego and my evolving Self.

NOTION: “Smoking Is Bad for You” – Just Ask the Mirror(s)
Illusion, mistaking the unreal for real, is the masterful result of “smoke and mirrors”. Smoke obscures and impairs the vision while mirrors cast reflections that can make it difficult to grab hold of what is genuine. Sometimes the first challenge is recognizing that smoke and mirrors are involved. The illusion of separation and independence is shaken by quantum mechanics in discovering that solids are not so “solid” afterall. Considering the space in an atom between its nucleus and its orbiting elections, the physical universe is more like swiss cheese than cheddar. The energy fields emanating from plants and animals tells me that my influence goes beyond the visible outer limits of my skin; as I breathe and move through the world that I can see, I recognize that I am an integral part of it and separation is the illusion.

When I awaken from a disturbing dream and the feelings linger, I remind myself, “It was only a dream.” Suddenly, I am able to let go of the feelings because I recognize that the “dream” is not my “reality”. Similarly, when I recognize that my “life” is more about my perceptions and choices, I realize the potential for a different way of living. Instead of resisting what displeases me, embracing enables me to detect and observe my contribution to what is; I recognize my connection to every other human being whether local or seemingly distant. Can a ripple not affect the pond?

NOTION: The Quantum Leap Is Not So Far
For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ Acts 17:28 [New International Bible]

Most versions of this verse are translated as “in him” but others read “because of him”; I assert that “because” indicates skepticism as surely “we are not lining IN God”. Yet quantum mechanics affirms just that–the Animating Cause is so immense and pervasive that existence is contained within and not apart from. This points to that Field of Potentiality in which all are immerse like waves of an ocean, emerging for a time as somewhat distinct from other waves [exhibiting individuality] but then merging back into the whole. Language is funny; it’s use is limited in conveying perceptions and, at best, serves up only metaphors to facilitate comprehension.

as if in the Great Card Game of Life, I’m playing from a hand of infinite possibilities
